Teriberka Tour from Murmansk: The Arctic Ocean by Day, the Aurora by Night
Teriberka is a village of a few hundred people at the literal end of the road — beyond it, only the Barents Sea and, eventually, the North Pole. Once a thriving fishing port, then nearly abandoned, it became world-famous as the haunting setting of the Oscar-nominated film Leviathan (2014).
This tour combines both in a single day: the Arctic Ocean in daylight, the northern lights after dark.
Itinerary
Hotel pickup in Murmansk
We drive north-east across the tundra — 120 km, about 2.5 hours. The last stretch is on a gravel road that is an experience in itself. In winter our guides check road status every morning and adjust timing.
Old Teriberka & the ship graveyard
Weathered wooden ships half-sunk in the sand, abandoned barracks, the school from Leviathan. The most photographed shoreline in Arctic Russia.
The Arctic Ocean
We walk to the coast of the open Barents Sea: the "dragon eggs" beach of giant rounded boulders, the Batareysky waterfall falling into the ocean, WWII artillery positions on the cliffs. Fresh seafood at local spots is available at your own cost (not included).
The aurora hunt begins
Teriberka and the road back offer near-zero light pollution. As darkness falls we monitor the Kp index and cloud radar, choose the night's best stop — the coast, a tundra lake, or a spot midway to Murmansk — and wait for the sky with hot tea. Your guide photographs you under the aurora.
